NEW ULM — While summer is coming to
an end, that doesn’t mean it’s time to push aside any fitness plans you may
have started this spring. In fact, the New Ulm Park and Recreation department
has many fall activities planned this year to keep people of all ages active
while the temperatures drop.
The Park and Rec department offers
plenty of fall favorites, including flag football for those in grades 1-5,
youth volleyball for those in grades 3-6, youth archery for ages 6-14 and both
youth and adult pottery.
One of the Park and Rec’s most popular
events, the Hermann 5K Fun Run/Walk, will also take place on Saturday, Oct. 14.
Cost of the event is $23 for residents,
$25.30 for non residents and a $15 student fee for participants under 23 years
old.
This will be the ninth year of this
event, which is New Ulm’s most unique 5K with a course that has hills, steps,
and runs through Flandrau Park and it features New Ulm’s most recognizable
figure (Arminius the Cherusci, or Hermann) starting the race with cannon shots.
The Hermann Tot Trot is another popular
event for those ages 3-9.
In addition to the 5K, the race will
include the Hermann Tot Trot for Children ages 3-9 years old who will compete
on a special short course with an emphasis on fun.
The pool at the Recreation Center will
also be a popular place this fall with different sessions of swim lessons and
classes in each session. There will be adult swim lessons offered so this is a
great chance for anyone to brush up on their swimming skills.
The Hermann Swim Club will also start
back for participants ages 8-17 training to improve their swim strokes, build
muscle, speed, strength and improve endurance.
Additionally, a new swimming event will
be offered for the first time this fall called The Floating Pumpkin Patch. The
Park and Rec department will put a new spin on the traditional pumpkin search
by creating a patch in the pool for participants to hunt for the perfect
pumpkin in the pool, then deck it out at a decorating station with all sorts of
fun items. This is a family event, suitable for participants of all ages.
Youth flag football is available for
those in grades 1-5.
Schugel said it’s important to keep the
Park and Rec Department list of activities growing.
“Really, no matter what
season we are in we are always looking for new programs or events to offer the
community,”
he said. “This season we again have added some
new programs and events in hopes that we continue to expand our reach and goal
of providing fun, healthy, and impactful leisure opportunities for the
community.”
Fitness is always a theme with New Ulm
Park and Recreation and this fall is no different. The new Group Fitness Class
schedule has many popular offerings back along with new classes such as Barre
Pilates, HITT with Yoga, and Dance Fitness.
In addition to the fitness class
schedule Fitness Programs such as Adult/Child Fit and Fun is back in which
adults and children ages 2-5 years old exercise together while having fun
benefiting both the adult and child.
A new program called Weightlifting for
Women will be offered in two different sessions. Schugel said the class is
designed to help women feel more comfortable in the weight room. The Park and
Rec department will teach participants how to use the equipment at the fitness
center, skills for warm up and cool down, and the knowledge to build and design
their own workout plans. Schugel said the goal is for participants to leave the
class feeling confident and motivated to move forward on their own.
Swimming lessons for participants of
all ages will take place this fall.
For those unable to make a weekly
commitment to the activities, there are plenty of parks or trails located
throughout the city of New Ulm for everyone to use and enjoy.
